Model Steam Trains As A Hobby

I have an uncle that recently retired from working on the railroad after 25 years of service.  He has mentioned he wants to reconstruct his basement into his own train station to run and build into a small city.  So for his retirement party I would love to surprise him with the starter kit he needs, allowing him to go from there and build what he is wanting to.  I have been looking into what is needed to begin this construction project in his basement.

I have been looking on line to do some research of my own.  I've been searching for model steam trains starter kits as well as the traditional locomotive starter kits.  One thing that I have noticed is that normally when you are constructing a room for your train set you want to have a theme.  There are three eras that I have come upon. These are the steam era, the modern era, and the transition era.

In the steam era it seems to be mainly focused on western themed time period.  From the Wild West era which was 1870 through the 1940's.  This is a nostalgic time period for most people; remembering the trains being pulled by steam engines.  The modern era is mostly the trains of today 1960 through the present.    They can be anything from commuter trains to hauling products from state to state.   For the most part the trains of today are normally used to haul though.  The transition time period was between 1940 through 1950 when diesel trains and steam trains were both travelling the tracks.  It was the time that the diesel was being brought in and the steam locomotives were being phased out.  This would be a great theme to go with if you are looking for the best of both worlds.

My uncle was and is still very fond of the transition period.  He loved watching the trains coming and going.  That was always such a comfort to him.  I found model steam trains starter kit to start his little village, and I think that he will absolutely fall in love with trains all over again.  I am so excited to help him get off and building his "train town".  Good luck to fellow train lovers looking to being a hobby building model trains.
