The more you learn about the hobby of collecting model railroad trains, the more you realize, this is a world unto itself. From the trains, to the layout, to the scale and scenery, it is a specialized, stylized art form to the people who are passionate about it.

In many cases, someone has sparked this interest, whether it be a father or grandfather, this magnificent hobby and pastime probably began with a few pieces, lovingly cared for, and handed down to a new generation of enthusiasts. Just because you may start out with only a few trains, and a small track, doesn't mean you cannot make the most of it. In fact, many model train hobbyists take as much pride in the scenery which they often craft on their own, as they do in the actual trains. The scenery can literally bring your setting to life, and, can be changed as often as needed, to accommodate more trains, or tracks.

As you begin to set up your benchwork for your trains, it makes sense to draw out a rough outline of what you have envisioned. Always make sure to leave room for expansion, as you will likely acquire more trains at some point. Think about the access you want to have to every area of your set-up, and whether you will ever want to move sections of your track for display somewhere else. Other considerations are the layout, and what types of configurations you envision for your track, loop to loop, or end to end, as well as determining how many levels your trains will cover.

With just a little bit of research, even a total novice can quickly get a handle on this wonderful hobby. Model Railroad enthusiasts can be found just about everywhere. It is likely that you will see advertisements for these groups at the local shop where your trains, supplies and accessories can be found. Shows and conventions are extremely popular among collectors, and easy to find. Before long, you will have discovered a new and wonderful hobby, to enjoy and pass down to your own children and grandchildren.
