Maybe it's the relaxation that comes from realizing one is truly at home. Or is it a sense of being young again, or just nostalgia for a simpler time. Whatever it is, there's a feeling you get when creating and operating a model railroad that can't be replaced by all the video games in the world. A couple of evening hours spent running n scale model trains can help alleviate a boxcar load of daily stress. Model railroading is also an excellent outlet for creativity, with virtually no limitations but one's own, except for space in which to lay the track. An n scale setup is a great help with the space issue.

N scale is the second most popular scale in model railroading, and enthusiasts are adamant in their support of n scale model trains. One of the reasons is that n scale model trains are smaller than the slightly more popular HO scale, and this reduced size can make a big difference in the amount of scale mileage of track that it is possible to fit into a given space. For this reason, n scale is highly popular in Japan and the UK as well, although their versions of n scale differ from ours by a tiny amount.

A good basic n scale layout will fit on a tabletop. N scale model trains are powered by 12 volt DC electric motors fitted into the locomotives pull the cars along, just like real trains operate. The power is supplied to the engine from the track itself. As time goes on and space permits, you will certainly want to add more track and more trains to your layout, but you can also create switching yards, add scale buildings and stations or even build your own scale town. You can create hills, tunnels and bridges, and landscape them any way you want to. The level of creative involvement can be whatever the participant desires it to be. Many of these components can be purchased, while you can learn to make many others inexpensively at home.

There is nothing to be gained by keeping all this imaginative effort to yourself, either. Try to get your kids involved. They can get up and actually work with their hands, not just sit on the couch punching buttons with their thumbs. The whole family can enjoy a pastime involving tangible objects that can be touched, held or created. With n scale model trains, 'quality time' has never been in short supply.
